English councils are being urged to show that it’s not just their country’s football team that can hit the headlines, thanks to a recently launched award.
The Clean Britain Awards 2007, run by the British Cleaning Council (BCC), are open to all parts of the UK with the opportunity of winning the title of ‘Cleanest Place in Britain’. With the Rough Guide to Britain giving England a bit of a bashing, this couldn’t have come at a better time.
Judith West, Chairman of BCC said: “England is currently engulfed in a wave of national pride for the football team at the World Cup. But it’s important that our cities, towns and districts show Scotland, Ireland and Wales that our football’s not the only force to be reckoned with.”
Uptake from English councils has been strong so far but the BCC would love to see all our regions entered to be in with the chance of winning the clean crown.
Continued Judith: “While our country is busy flag waving it is important that we take stock of the day-to-day things affecting our lives like the state of our towns and districts. This is the UK’s biggest clean and tidy competition and our judges, with a wealth of environmental cleansing experience, will give feedback to all entrants on how to improve their cleaning operations.”
The Awards scheme has replaced the popular ‘Britain’s Cleanest City’ competition run by the BCC for the past 19 years. Winners of that competition achieved an enhanced profile through national and regional media exposure, not forgetting the kudos gained having a tidy reputation. Previous winners include: City of London and Birmingham.
Recent studies have shown that tourists seek out towns and cities that are clean and well maintained.
LET’S SHOW SOME SCOTTISH PRIDE

Scotland has the chance to prove it is every bit as good a place to visit as England, thanks to a recently launched award.
The Clean Britain Awards 2007, run by the British Cleaning Council, are open to all parts of the UK with the opportunity of winning Cleanest Place in Britain.
Eibhlin O’Somachain of the BCC said: “Scotland has the opportunity to out-shine its UK counterparts through its cities, towns and districts battling it out for the title of Cleanest Place in Britain. It mightn’t have got far in the World Cup, but here’s a chance to show England , Wales and Northern Ireland some real competition.”
Some of Scotland’s major councils have registered interest in partaking to thrash it out with locations from all over England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the clean crown – organisers hope that as many Scottish councils show their celtic pride and enter the awards as soon as possible.
Continued Eibhlin: “English pride is at an all-time high at the minute due to the flag waving of the nation’s football fans. We would like this pride to pass over to Scottish councils by entering the UK’s biggest clean and tidy competition. Our judges, with a wealth of environmental cleansing experience, will give feedback to all entrants on how to improve their cleaning operations.”
