Wales Could Boost ‘Beguiling’ Image

BCC News Release, Tuesday 27th June 2006

Welsh councils have the chance to prove their reputation as a beauty spot, thanks to a recently launched award.

The Clean Britain Awards 2007, run by the BCC, are open to all parts of the UK with the opportunity of winning the title of the ‘Cleanest Place in Britain’.

This will come as a boost to Wales, currently experiencing its share of national pride for being named the most “beguiling part of the British Isles” in the Rough Guide to Britain published this month.

Judith West, Chairman of BCC said: “Wales should embrace its enhanced profile which could bring more and more people to visit this beautiful country. To enter the Clean Britain Awards gives Wales the chance of showing England, Scotland and Northern Ireland that it is a force to be reckoned with.”

Some of the main cities of Wales have shown interest in the competition but organisers hope that as many councils as possible will enter these high profile awards.

Continued Judith: “English pride is at an all-time high at the minute due to the flag waving of the nation’s football fans. We would like this pride to pass over to Welsh councils by entering the UK’s biggest clean and tidy competition.

“I believe that cities, towns and districts should see this as an opportunity not to be missed. Quite simply, gaining the reputation as clean and tidy location could bring the visitors flocking in.”

The Awards scheme has replaced the popular ‘Britain’s Cleanest City’ competition run by the BCC for the past 19 years. Winners of that competition achieved an enhanced profile through national and regional media exposure plus kudos gained having a tidy reputation. Recent studies have shown that tourists seek out towns and cities that are clean and well maintained.

The closing date for entries to the Clean Britain Awards 2007 is Friday 30th June.

Let’s Show England a Clean Pair of Heels

BCC News Release, Tuesday 27th June 2006

Northern Ireland has the chance to prove it is every bit as good a place to visit as its UK counterparts, thanks to a recently launched award.

The Clean Britain Awards 2007, run by the British Cleaning Council (BCC), are open to all parts of the UK with the opportunity of winning Cleanest City, Town and District. And with a recent survey suggesting that councils here are polishing up their act – we could be about to wipe the floor with England, Scotland and Wales!

Eibhlin O’Somachain of the BCC said: “There is no better time for Northern Ireland’s cities, towns and district councils to be thrusting themselves into the limelight, with the peace process now in full flow and major investment opportunities facing the country.”

Belfast City Council is one of the major councils to have registered interest in partaking and it could battle it out with locations from all over Scotland, Wales and England for the clean crown. But organisers hope that as many Northern Irish councils as possible enter the awards making them as keenly-fought as the Republic’s “Tidy Towns” competition. This has become such an institution that online turf account Paddy Power runs a book on who will win it!

Continued Eibhlin: “English pride is at an all-time high at the minute due to the flag waving of the nation’s football fans. We would like this pride to pass over to Northern Ireland councils by entering the UK’s biggest clean and tidy competition. Our judges, with a wealth of environmental cleansing experience, will give feedback to all entrants on how to improve their cleaning operations.”

The Awards scheme has replaced the popular ‘Britain’s Cleanest City’ competition run by the BCC for the past 19 years. Winners of that competition achieved an enhanced profile through national and regional media exposure, not forgetting the kudos gained having a tidy reputation.
